What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma refers to a disease in which the optic nerve, the nerve that carries visual information from the eye to the brain, is damaged.  This is often (but not always) related to having high eye pressure.  While there are many different types of glaucoma, the end result is usually loss of peripheral vision, and later in the disease course, loss of central vision or even blindness.  This typically occurs without any symptoms, which is why half of those with glaucoma don’t even know they have it.  There is no cure for glaucoma, but with proper diagnosis and treatment most individuals are able to maintain good vision and a normal lifestyle.

What are cataracts?

A cataract is a common eye condition in which the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy.  This clouding causes symptoms such as blurry vision, glare, sensitivity to light, and difficulty with daily tasks such as reading or driving, especially at night.  Cataracts usually affect older adults, but the speed in which they progress can vary from person to person.  Mild cataracts can be managed with strong lighting and glasses, but if these measures don’t help then cataract surgery may be an option.  Cataract surgery can also be helpful for the treatment of glaucoma!
